The reading and the lecture are both about the advantages of collecting fossil by private collectors. The author of the reading believes that it has negative effect on scientific research and for the general public due to it is becoming privatized. However, the lecturer casts doubts about the claims made in the article and refutes all the theories presented in the reading passage.

First of all, the author of the reading points out that fossils are not being showcased at museum for everybody to see but private individuals are buying it for their personal collection. The author mentioned that the public suffer the most because they are less chance they can glance at the precious fossils, thus their interest on it might decline. The point is challenged by the lecturer. He says that the public are more aware of the fossil stones. Furthermore, he argues that more fossils are being purchased in the market, thus, allowing school, library, museums to display their collection to the public.

Secondly, the author contents that scientist miss the opportunity to learn more about the history, characteristics of the fossils which means fewer discoveries can be taken into account. The article notes that collectors buy the most rarest fossils and spend fortune for them to acquire it whereas scientist and universities have only limited fossils to study because they cannot afford it. The lecturer rebuts this argument. He suggests that it is not true that scientist cannot study the fossils. He elaborates on this by mentioning that before collectors acquire it, they are the first people to examine and study the fossils, hence scientist have a lot of time to gather needed data and information on this fossil.

Lastly, the author states that private collectors somehow destroy scientific evidence with the fossil. The author establishes that majority of the enthusiast are not well trained or uninterested in documenting the history of the fossil. The lecturer, on the other hand, posits that there must be collateral damage in order to attain such precious fossil. He puts forth the idea that even if there are many fossils available they may become undiscovered because people are afraid that some fossils will be damaged.
