The lecturer rejects the idea presented in the reading passage about the positive impact salvage logging has on the damaged forest and the economy. In her opinion, salvage logging is harmful in the long run.
First, the lecturer does not agree with the point made in the reading passage that salvage logging is likely to help forest areas recover from the disaster by creating more rooms for the new tree. She contends that cleaning up after the disaster is not necessary. When the dead tree decomposes, they will make the environment more suitable for the next generation to grow.
The lecture goes on to refutes the claim in the reading passage that the insect living in the dead tree will damage the healthy trees. On the contrary, she argues, the research shows that the spruce bark beetle has not caused damage for many years. Also, the dead tree is used by animals, like birds, that influence the forest environment positively. So salvage logging will be harmful in the long run.
Additionally, the lecturer challenges the economic advantage of salvage logging mentioned in the reading. She reasons that the dead tree can only be salvaged at a very high cost. Besides, the job salvage logging creates is temperate and requires a lot professional knowledge which local residents do not possess. Thus, the economic benefits of salvage logging is not convincing.
