TPO-44 - Integrated Writing Task In 1957 a European silver coin dating to the eleventh century was discovered at a Native American archaeological site in the state of Maine in the United States. Many people believed the coin had been originally brought to

The topic is about the European silver coin discovered at a Native American site. The reading passage lists three arguments to indicate that the coin is historical fake. However, the lecturer rejects each of the argument and claims that the coin is a genuine historical evidence.

First, the reading passage states that the location of the coin was very far away from other documented sites, which suggests that there was no real connection between the coin and the settlements. In contrast, the lecturer argues that there were many other proved historical evidence were found far away from the sites. The reason of why the coin is in distance is that Native American travelers liked to obtain objects from far away places, and brought those coins back to the site.

The second argument presented in the reading passage is that there were no other coins have been found at the Canadian sites were from the Norse. The lecturer, on the contrary, points out that the evidence is not necessary. She says that when European settlers went back to Europe, they packed p all the silver coins with them. It's because the Norse did not create permanent settlement in North America, and they packed up all their valuable possessions when then returned.

In addition, according to the reading passage, travelers would not bring coins because they knew that the coin was likely to be useless, since the Native people did not recognize the coin as money. The lecturer disproves this points by indicating that the Native people valued attractive or unusual objects. They might use the coin in other ways, like jewelry, as the coin looked very appealing. If the Native people were interested in beauty, the travelers could trade coins with them.
