TPO-15 - Integrated Writing Task The cane toad is a large (1.8 kg) amphibian species native to Central and South America. It was deliberately introduced to Australia in 1935 with the expectation that it would protect farmers' crops by eating harmful insec
The reading and listening are both about the pros and cons of cane toad in Australia. The author of the reading believes that presence of cane toads in lands are not beneficial on crops. However, the lecturer casts doubts about the claims made in the article and refutes all the theories presented in the reading passage.
First of all, the author points out that the colony of cane toad can be prevented by spreading by building fences, thus, it can slow they from reaching places they haven't colonize. The point is challenged by the lecturer. He says that fences is not the solution to the problem in the infestation of cane toad, but, it will only small toads or eggs will be easily escape the net due to their small bodies, hence, they will just floe through the river streams and be spread out to different parts of the river.
Secondly, the author contends that volunteer can capture and destroy them. The article notes that due to their small size they can be easily caught in simple traps and be captured by using bare hands. However, the lecturer rebuts this argument. He suggests that volunteer or untrained individuals will only cause harm to other population of frogs. He elaborates on this by mentioning that toads from the amphibian species looks similar to cane toads, thus, this disparity will lead to endangering other species as well.
Finally, the author states that there are available research that specialize in controlling the population of cane toad, which is causing them to catch virus. The article establishes that the process of the virus is to infect few species of reptiles and amphibian species, thus it specifically will target cane toad. The lecturer, on the other hand, posits that the virus will affect all the species of amphibian species from central and southern america. Moreover, He puts forth the idea that are easily being transported back from all parts of the world, so the virus being deployed to cane toad will drastically affect the entire ecosystem.
