TPO 54- The Salton Sea in California is actually a salty inland lake. The level of salt in the lake's water—what scientists call its salinity—has been increasing steadily for years because the lake's water is evaporating faster than it is being replaced by rainfall or rivers. If the trend continues, the lake's water will soon become so salty that the lake will be unable to support fish and bird populations. The lake would then become essentially a dead zone. Fortunately, there are several ways to reverse the trend that is threatening the lake's health.
The reading and lecture are both about lake salton sea salinity level. The author of the reading believes that the high salinity levels are harmful to birds and fishes in the area and there are three solutions that are suggested. However, the lecturer casts doubts about the claims in the article and refutes all the theories presented. She says that the removal of salt in the water is a great idea, but the solutions are not realistic.
First of all, the author points out that desilination facilities will help remove the salt in the lake water. It is mentioned that the water in the lake would evaporate into steam and the salt and other impurities will be left behind, thus the clean water will be returned to the lake. Conversely, the point is challenged by the lecturer. She says that it is true that the salinity content of the lake would drastically dropped but health hazards might pose threats to human beings. Moreover, she argues that salt and chemical toxic Solinum will be retained in our atmosphere and when people ingest the harmful chemical into our lungs it would be dangerous to our overall health.
Secondly, the author contends that another solution is to dilute the salinity of the lake with water coming from the ocean. The article notes that water coming from the ocean will help to reduce the lake salinity if it will be combined together thru pipelines and canal system. On the contrary, the lecturer rebuts this argument. She suggests that it will require the construction of the pipeline and canal to merge the water together. Furthermore, she elaborates on this by mentioning that local government do not have enough resources to allocate this project and the pacific ocean is 100 kms away from the Salton sea and it is very expensive.
Finally, the author states that by making walls to divide the section of the lake it will control the salinity of the lake. The lecturer, on the other hand, posits that this plan is unlikely to work on the long term. She puts forth the idea that the area is within local region frequency and intense geologic activity with earthquakes which will destroy the wall division. In addition, she also notes that the walls can only withstand on short period, but if earthquake will struck again the walls be totally destroyed and the division with high salinity content will mixed with the low salt content.
