TPO-15 - Integrated Writing Task The cane toad is a large (1.8 kg) amphibian species native to Central and South America. It was deliberately introduced to Australia in 1935 with the expectation that it would protect farmers' crops by eating harmful insec

In the text, it is written that the cane toads, which are amphibian animals, were brought to Australia from Central and South America in the hope that they could inhibit some harmful insect species from eating crops. However, they became the problem themselves for other animal species by threatening them. The author of the reading suggests his/her arguments whereas the professor believes that the author’s solutions would cause undesired results to the environment.

First off, the author offers building a national fence as a way of a solution in order to restrain the toads' population. It is also mentioned that this method was also used to prevent rabbits, which were introduced to Australia from foreign countries, from harming the native ecosystem. The professor, on the other hand, points out that in order to establish a new population, passing of a few young toads through the fence is enough. So, the fence would probably not be an effective way to solve this problem.

According to the reading, since cane toads’ habitats are restricted with water, it is easy to catch and destroy them by setting a trap. So, the governments should encourage people to be a volunteer on this duty. The lecturer draws attention to the point that untrained volunteers may, unintentionally, damage native frogs, which are already endangered.

The last way of the solution made in the article is infecting a virus to the toads in order to keep down their population. The speaker remarks the point that the virus will spread other animals like reptiles, which are usually transported by researchers from Australia to America. Although the virus is not harmful to other species, it will attack and probably exterminate the native toads, which are crucial for the ecosystem, when it reaches America. As a result, the ecosystem in America will be in danger.
