The reading and the lecture are both about saving an endangered species, Torreya plant. The article proposes three solutions that can be implemented to avoid further decline of population. However, the professor explains that none of the mentioned solutions are likely to result in success and refutes each of the author's reasons.
First, the reading claims that reestablishing the Torreya plants in the same location of existence can prove to be effective. The microclimatic conditions required which are being faciliatated in Florida can prove to be a very favourable environment for the plant growth. The professor rebuts this point by stating that this method is unlikely to be favourable due to the drastic climatic variations happening lately. The larger areas are being affected by global warming leading to dried up wetlands or arid regions which inturn affects the microclimatic conditions too. Additionally, the professor mentions that, with the varying climatic conditions it is difficult for any adequate climatic condition to exist.
Secondly, the article suggests the method of assisted migration, a method in which the Torreya habitats are entirely moved to a different location far from the microclimate which will favour the growth beyond a restricted climatic area. However, the professor challenges this claim made by the author and points out that such migration can lead to unpredictable and uncontrollable outcomes which may have severe consequences. She elaborates on this by providing an example of Black Lotus tree. When this species was migrated to a different area, it led to the death of some already endangered plants in the environment and consequently proved to worsen the situation.
Finally, the author posits that the Torreya seeds and saplings can be preserved in research centres which will provide them an environment of constant monitoring as well as research. In contrast, the lecturer points out that such environment is not suitable for plants to resist diseases. There needs to be geneticaly diverse and large number of plants for a particular species to resist disease which is not suitable in a restricted place like research centres. Hence, such environments, though may seem beneficial, do not provide a safe environment for the habitat.
Therefore, the lecturer contends that the mentioned suggestions are not likely to be successful due to the various issues addressed along with it.
