The reading and the lecture are both about the solution of recent overall population decreasing of Torreya taxifoha trees. The author points out three probable solutions of it and tries to establish his point. However, the professor rebuts the article's points by saying that none of those are effective solutions to this problems.
First of all, the writer suggests that if people reestablish Torreya in the same location, the northern part of Florida, where those trees get suitable cold temperature and wetland microclimate, the total population of Torreya trees will increase in future. The professor, on the other hand, challenges this idea and states that unlikely those microclimates will provide the proper environment to flourish Torreya trees because those areas are not cooler for the whole year. Moreover, such microclimate is not always wetland, sometimes they become dried land. Therefore, the population of Torreya cannot be recover by taking this step.
The second solution posited in the reading is to relocate the location of Torreya land from Florida to further north, where the temperature is really lower. He further says that assisted migration might be the best solution for this matter. However, the professor disproves this point by explaining an example of such measure. She implies that Black trees once relocated, and the outcome of this relocation was very dangerous to the native trees since people assist only the particular trees. She added that if again such relocations do, the similar result might occur.
Finally, researching the seeds and saplings to find out the problems of declining those trees is the best solution, is addressed in the reading. Since more deep research on this will find the effective solution of keeping those trees in the world, a more intense study should do. This point is refuted by the professor. She thinks that small-scale study of seeds and saplings of those trees might not able to find the culprits. She also says that a large diverse trees' seeds must need to reserve and check to finding the problems, but this task is not possible for a research center.
