TPO-18 integrated writing task
The reading and the lecture are both about the reasons of the decline of Torreya. The reading passage claims three ways to address this decline. As opposed to, the lecturer who counters-argues that viewpoint, trying to prove that these three ways do not seem convincing.
First and foremost, the writer mentions that scientists should reestablish Torreya in the same location in which it thrived in the past. A microclimate would help the growth of this tree despite the weather condition in the large region. Therefore, the tree would thrive. On the contrary, the lecturer cannot disagree more, reasoning that the climate in small places is highly effected by the large region, you cannot separate those. Consequently, the global warming will effect all the regions in the same way.
The second argument the author gives is that scientists should move Torreya to an entirely different location. In addition, they have seen that this tree can be grown in places with a cool weather. However, the professor cannot be more outraged, explaining that if Torrya thrive in that new environment that would effect other trees and animals that live there. So, that would threaten the other species because the competition would be high for survival.
Lastly, on one hand, the passage points that scientists should preserve Torreya in research center. Monitoring environment where the tree will be growing, it would be easier for scientists both to protect the species and conduct research. Nevertheless, the professor declare that if scientists do that the population of this tree cannot resist the disease that would appear. Trees and other species can survive from different disease because of the diversity that is present in a certain region.
In conclusion, although, the text suggests three ways in supporting the decline of Torreya, the lecturer believes that non of them is persuasive.
