TPO 20 integrated writing

The reading and the lecture are both about whether let it burn policy is good or not for Yellowstone national park, which experienced huge devastating forest fires in 1988. The author of the reading believes there are three reasons why let it burn policy is not favorable as from the examples of 1988 fires. The lecturer challenges the statements made by the author. She is of the opinion that forest fires are part of the natural order and have creative power in ecology, and hence, the let it burn policy is good.
First of all, the author suggests that large amount of trees and vegetation in the Yellowstone park were destroyed by the fire. It is mentioned that trees were scorched and small plants were completely burned out. The argument is refuted by the lecturer. She says scorched vegetations and burned areas were colonized by new plant species, causing diverse plant species to occupy the area. Furthermore, she argues that some smaller plants need open area to grow, and the sorched land satisfy this condition, and also some seeds are germenated due to extreme heat. So, the fire cause such seeds to be germenated.
Secondly, the article posits that the fire impacted the wildlife in Yellowstone. The article notes many animals abadoned the place and unable to return due to the distruped food chain by the fire. The lecturer, however, casts doubt on this by asserting that animal populations are actually increased afterward. She elaborates on this by mentioning that new species of small plants cause the populations of rabbits and hares to be increased, which in turn also increase the predator populations that feed on these herbivore mammals.
Finally, it is stated in the reading that as a tourist destination, Yellowstone, attract less tourists due to fires, which caused the local economy to be suffered. The author establishes that large number of tourists decided to not visit the park and because of these local businesses were affected badly. The lecturer, on the other hand, opposes that only in 1988, the huge fire to be occurred due to specific combination of that year that less rain, dry weather, and so on. She puts for the idea that every since that year, no such combinations have been observed, and more and more tourists are coming ever year.
