Passage and lecture are both about "let and burn" policy, allowing forest fire to burn forest trees without causing much damage. On one side, the writer suggests three theories regarding changing this policy with policy of extinguishing forest fires due to immense damage caused by "let and burn" policy -like the fire in the summer of 1988 in Yellowstone. On the other hand, the lecturer cast doubts on the claims made by the author, stating that this policy is more constructive rather than be distractive.
First off, professor dismisses that fire cause huge damage to trees and vegetation with two arguments. First, eliminating trees obtains place needed for growing more vegetation and also causes more diversity to plants and vegetation. Second, there are some plants which need to be exposed to extreme heat so they can grow and the fire in 1988 acquire this heat for the plants.
In addition, it is not valid that fire only had negative effect on animals. This is due to the fact that this policy create more opportunities for animals rather than causing harm to their spices. The area after fire would be a great habitat for small animals like rabbits and hares and increasing these animal in the forest will lead to a new food chain to be created for larger animals.
Last, it is considered that the fire had negative consequences on the local economy in result of decreasing tourist attraction. First, this claim could be true if the fire occurs every year but, the fire of 1988 in Yellowstone took place in existence of several rare combination, like dry plants and strong winds, and it is obvious that the fire only have happened once in the past forty years. Furthermore, as the professor said, visitors came back to park year after the fire and eventually years after that so the local economy remains stable.
