The reading and the lecture are discussing the genetically modified trees. The reading suggests they are have many advantages, however, the professor casts doubt on all of them as follows.
First, the author of the reading claims that the genetically modified trees survive more than the natural ones because they could be modified to be resistant to disease. He supports this argument by mentioning an example about the papaya tress. On the other hand, the speaker refutes this supposition by saying that the genetically modified tress are uniformed which means they are identical. As a result if any one tree failed to resist any environment factor like disease, or climate change, that would lead to the eradication of the whole trees since they do not have the diversity that is found in natural trees.
Second, the text contends that the genetically modified trees have more economic benefits than the natural tress, because they grow faster and give more yields. The lecturer, in contrast, draws attention to the fact that the companies that produce these tress have hidden motives, mainly economic motives. She elaborated this point by stating that the farmers have to pay for the company every time they grow these tree. That is according to the laws, which means that there will not be more profits as the reading claims.
Third, the reading argues that these genetically modified trees are a good solution to the problem of overexploitation of wild trees which are being cut down faster than they grows. The professor goes against this claim by mentioning that the modified trees will be strong competitor for the natural resources. They could completely wipe out all the wild trees since wild trees would not have the same ability to benefit form the natural resources.
