The reading and the lecture are both about modified trees. The author of the reading believes that these trees are beneficial. However, the lecturer casts doubt on the claims made in the article because she thinks it has more cons than pros.
To begin with, the article points out that genetically modified tree has more chance to survive in nature. It is mentioned that they are resistant to infections that kill unmodified trees of papaya. This point is challenged by the lecturer. She supposes that even though they are resistant to infection these trees cannot be survived during the climate change. Moreover, she adds that natural trees in contrast to them have greater chance to stay alive.
Secondly, the article contends that growing such trees would increase economy’s profit because they are growing faster and their yields give more fruits. The lecturer rebuts this argument because the company that supplies with genetically modified trees sell seeds that cost more expensive than natural seeds. Apart from that, she says a farmer cannot plant modified seeds for free because of the law and, hence, they pay extra money.
Finally, the article states that another advantage of these trees is that it is possible to recover areas that were damaged due to the fire and another obstacle. The lecturer, on the other hand, posits that it is completely bad idea because modified trees would replace natural one with the fact that they are aggressive. In addition, they would take all of the natural recourses needed for natural trees like the sun, water and etc.
