The reading and lecture both discuss the idea of planting genetically modified trees benefits. While the reading states three advantages of genetically modified trees, the professor refutes, by saying that there are three problems associated to these modified trees.
Firstly, the reading avers that the genetically modified trees are designed to be stronger than nature tress. So, they can survive much better than the natural trees. However, the professor argues this notion by saying that the modified trees are designed to be resistant to one specific condition like climate changes or insect's pasties resistant. So, some individual species will be able to survive, but the genetically modified trees are more uniform. As a result, if they are not designed to be resistant to specific condition, all of them most likely to die with any change. So, they will wiped out.
In addition, the article mentions that these specific trees will provide the farmers with more economic benefits. This is because they will grow faster. So, the farmers will have plenty of yields. On the other hand, the professor questions this idea by pointing out that the modified trees have hidden cost. As, the company will charge the farmers more fee to buy these seeds. Moreover, these companies will ask for charge every time the farmers want to plant the modified threes.
Finally, the reading shows that the genetically modified trees will protect the wild trees from over cuts because they will satisfy the need for wood. Nevertheless, the professor contradicts this idea by saying that the modified trees will cause local damage. In addition, they will plant among the natural trees. Consequently, the genetically trees will compete with the natural trees about the natural resources as sunlight, soils, and nutrients. As a result, many natural trees will get affected.
