The reading calims that the ethanol is not a good replacement for gasoilne due to several reasons. However, the lecturer argues all the ideas and uses three evidences to refute them all.
The author argues that using ethanol is not helpful for solving one of the most important environmental issues which is green house effect caused by increase in the generation of carbon dioxide from burning fuels. Convesrely, The lecturer brings up the idea that burning ethanol is not adding to the global warming because plants absorb carbon dioxide for their growth. He states that although, burning ethanol release carbon dioxide, growing plants counteract this issue by absorbing carbon dioxide from the air because growing plants remove CO2.
Furthermore, the reading passage holds the view that for producing a large amount of ehtanol, the amount of plants available for uses will decrease drastically. On the contrary, the professor underlines the fact that to produce fuels such as ethanol, cellulose of the plants can be used and by using cell walls of the plants, a lot of plants would not be removed.
Finally, The reading asserts that the reason that the price of ethanol can compete with the price of gasoline, is that government helps to lower the price of ethanol in the form of tax. So, if the government wants to cease helping producers, the price of ethanol will enhance dramaticallyl. In contrast, the speaker dismisses it due to the fact that in the future, the price of ethanol can compete the price of gasoline. This is because if in the future, the amount of ethanol usuage increase, more ethanol should be produced and increase in the production of ethanol can decrease the production price. He states that, one study revealed that by enhancing the ethanol production, the price of ethanol will drop by 40 percent.
