Both listening and reading part mentioned to opposite viewpoints about the possibility of replacement of ethanol instead of gasoline. While the passage lists three reasons that this replacement is not efficient and viable, the professor in the audio mentioned contradictory of those reasons and call into the question them.
First of all, the passage said that the usage of ethanol for the sake of releasing carbon dioxide is not helpful for halting global warming; on the other hand, the lecturer rejects this assertion. As he mentioned, although, the ethanol as the gasoline releases the carbon dioxide to the environment, as the production of ethanol relies on the growing the plants; the growing plants remove the carbon dioxide. Each plant requires the carbon dioxide for its photosynthesis; therefore, plants cultivated for the purpose of making the ethanol absorb the carbon dioxide released by the usage ethanol.
Secondly, the text posits the threat of food resource reduction for animals as one of the negative sides of this replacement. As assumed in the article, since the ethanol is extracted from the plants, the use of a big portion of plants for this purpose can reduce the available food resources for the animal. However, the professor casts doubt on the accuracy of this assumption. As he said the ethanol is extracted from the cellulose of plant which is the cell wall of the plant is abundant. Furthermore, this part of plants is not eaten by the animals; therefore, the production of ethanol does not threaten the food sources for animals.
Finally, meanwhile, the text asserts that the ethanol will not be as cheap as the gasoline in the case that the government does not financially support it; the audio part highlights the fact the by mass production of ethanol its prices will be decreased in the future and will not require the government advocacy. As he mentioned if the production of ethanol gets three times more than the past, its price will decrease by forty percent.
