The reading and the lecture discuss the using of Ethanol fuel, drived from plants. The author thinks the Ethanol is not a good replacement of the gasoline and he provides three reasons, on the other hand, the lecturer believes that these reasons are not convincing.
First, the article states that the Ethanol fuel releases carbon dioxide just as the gasoline, so it does not give any extra benefit. However, the professor, refutes this claim by explaining that the plants used in producing the Ethanol eliminate that effect. He elaborates on that by mentioning that these plants absorb the carbon dioxide which counteracts the amount of the gas released when used as a fuel.
Second, the text contends that using plants in producing fuel will reduce the amount of plants available for feeding animals. In contrast, the speaker points out that there are alternatives plants like the cellulose, which is not used in feeding animals, can be used to produce the Ethanol fuel.
Third, the author of the reading posits that without the governmental subsidy, the prices of the new fuel will be high and can not compete with the gasoline. Conversely, the lecturer rebuts challenges this claim. He asserts that the prices of the Ethanol fuel will be highly competitive when it is produced with large quantities and it will not need any money from the government. He also mentions that cost of producing one unit of Ethanol can be reduced to 40% when the fuel produced on commercial level.
