TPO-23 - Integrated Writing Task
The article states that the population of yellow cedar have been declining for more than a century and provides three reasons of support. However, the professor cast doubt on all the explanation made in the article.
First, the reading states that cedar bark beetle should be held responsible for the decline of the yellow cedar. The professor refutes this point by stating that the healthy yellow cedars are generally much more resistant to insect infection as the bark and leaves of the yellow cedar are concentrated with powerful chemicals that are poisonous to insects.
Second, the article claims that the brown bears may have caused the decline of the yellow cedar. The professor refutes this point by saying that the declining all across North of America but there are no bears on the Island and the reading’s view thus doesn’t hold up.
Third, the reading passage posits that the yellow cedar decline should be attributed to climatic changes. The lecture, conversely, disagrees with this explanation. He argues that if this theory is valid, then more trees are supposed to die in higher elevations because it is colder there, but on the contrary, it is in the lower elevations that more trees are found dying.
