The reading passage and the lecture are both discussing the possible reasons of the yellow cedar tree population decline. The author of the snippet believes that there are three possible causes of tree decreasing. Although the lecturer argues that this tree is under decline, however, he considers that the statements made in the reading passage are wrong, and he reinforces his opinion by providing examples to support it.
First of all, it is indicated in the reading fragment that one of the cause of damaging trees could be cedar bark beetles, which are feeded by the tree bark. However, the speaker asserts that healthy trees of the yellow ceader are the most resistant to the insects, because its produce chemicals which are poisoness to the beetles. Consequently, the bark beetles are able attack only already dead or sick trees.
The subsequent lecturer’s argumant is related to the statement made in the excerpt that another cause of the tree decline can be brown bears which also eat a tree’s bark an destroy a tree itself. But the lecturer disputes this by claiming that the tree’s population decline with and without brown bears. In other words, the population of the yellow cedar tree is decreasing on the islands where brown bears are absent.
Finally, there is denoted in the reading fragment that the climate change effects a root system of the yellow cedar tree and, as a consequence, cold wheather leeds to the limited tree growth. However, the professor states that the fact that the tree growth is lower in the warm invironment than in cold one contradicts to the statement made in the reading passage.
