yellow tree cedar

The reading and the lecture both discuss the possible hypothesis behind the declination of yellow cedar trees. While the reading passage explains three hypothesis of reducing the number of yellow cedar trees, the lecture, However, challenges each of the hypothesis and states it is unfortunate that we do not know exactly what is killing these trees. And none of the explanations provided in the passage is adequate.

The first point that the listening makes to cast doubt on the reading passage is that the yellow cedar is more resistant for infestation by insects like cedar bark beetle. According to the professor, the yellow cedar tree produces powerful chemicals that are poisonous for cedar bark beetle and other insects. This point from the lecture argues with the reading because the passage only states that one of the reasons behind reducing the number of yellow cedar is parasitic attacks by the cedar bark beetle.

Another point that the lecturer makes to contend the writer's hypothesis is that brown bears numbers are declining in coastal islands where the yellow cedar trees are growing. Furthermore, the professor explains since the cedar trees are reducing in number with or without the presence of bears, therefore, the bears are unlikely the cause of yellow cedar inclination. However, the reading passage asserts that brown bears aggressive clawing and eating behavior on yellow cedar trees is one of the reasons for trees declination.

Finally, the speaker states that yellow trees die in low elevation when the temperature is warm more than in much colder and freeing high elevations. In addition, the professor explains that the growing roots are not likely to suffer deterioration from freezing or cold weather. On the contrary, the reading states that a gradual change in climate has weakened the root system of the yellow trees and initiate the tree growth in winter rather than spring. Gowing in such freezing weather will demolish the health of the whole tree.
