TPO 25 part 1
The professor claims that three arguments which says that the vessels were used as batteries in ancient times is not convincing and gives three reasons why this is true. These reasons contradict the reading's claim, which says that the vessels were not used as batteries in ancient times/
To begin with, the professor claims that the ancient people may have throw away the metal wires. He goes on explaining that the vessels were discovered by locals, not archeologists. Local people may have found other materials located near the jars. However, they were not archeologists, they cannot see the importance of those. As a consequence, they might have overlooked and thrown those away. From what the professor presents, it can be concluded that the vessels were used as batteries. This calls the reading's claim, which says that there were no metal wires located near the vessels, into question.
What is more, the reading says that no scrolls found inside the jars can be explained for the fact that the vessels were used as batteries. The professor, however, asserts that although copper cylinders look like the copper cylinders discovered in the ruins of Seleucia, it does not prove that the vessels cannot be use as batteries. According to professor, the copper cylinders were designed to keep scrolls. Ancient inventor later discovered that if people use them together with iron rods and some liquids, there will be electricity. That's how ancient batteries could have been born. Thus, the vessels were actually use as batteries.
Last but not least, the professor points out that the vessels were useful to people in ancient times. He starts explaining that the vessels can produce shock when people touched it. This could have been interpreted as evidence of some invisible power. People can easily see how people could convince others that they had magical powers through the use of batteries. Moreover, the batteries could have been used for healing. Modern medicines use this mild electric to stimulate muscles and relieve aches and pains. This directly runs against the reading's claim, which says that if the vessel were used as batteries, they were useless to people.
