Both the reading and the lecture discuss the spread out of the zebra mussel, a freshwater shellfish native to Eastern Europe, to the parts of North America. The article argues these invasions have a severe effect on water populations. While the professor claims that by telling there are different ways to overcome this settlement.
First, the passage avers the invasion might continue and no way to stop this invasion of the mussel because the mussel can either attach itself with the bottom of the ship or stay a life in the fresh water. This water called ballast water which the vessel used for balance its cargo. So by that way the mussel transfer from its original habitat o the North of America. The speaker encounters this point by saying the ship could use the salt water from the ocean instead of the pure one. By that way, the mussel cannot survive because the salty water kills it.
Second, the passage points out the domination of the mussel. And this dominant cannot stop because in the new habitat there is no predators attack the mussel. Conversely, the professor casts doubt on this point by explaining that there is a type of bird could be bringing to this new habitat and eat a lot of mussels. In that way, we could control it's widely spread.
Third, the article mentions the effect of the mussel on the other water world because it will eat a lot of them. The speaker encounters this point by saying that it is true that it has a negative impact on the type of fish. Whoever, there is a positive impact on another kind, especially those fish live on the bottom of the ocean because the mussel could eat the surface fish water. So the population of the deep water will be increased.
