The lecture and the reading passage both discussing about a 2200 years old clay jar contained with a copper cylinder surrounded with iron rod which is excavated in Egypt. The reading passage states that it was not used as batteries because there is no evidence for the usage of cells on that time, the lecture, however, argues this saying that the reasons given in the text are not convincing.
First of all, the reading states that if the jar was used as a battery then it should consist of conducting materials such as wires. The lecture counters this point stating that the pot was discovered by local people not the trained archaeologist. IN addition to that she points out that these lay people who found may over look these and throw away the wires.
secondly, the article makes an argument that cylinder was found near an ancient city Seleucia which used these for holding scrolls of the sacred texts. She agrees this, saying that it may be used to present the scrolls, she however, claims that it can be adapted later for other purpose.
Finally, the text argues that, if they did not have any appliance the battery alone is useless. The lecture refutes this saying that they may be used these for healing as modern medicine do. She gives examples of modern medicine uses electric current for pain relief.
