The reading describes why zebra mussel population, an Eastern European shellfish, are increasing rapidly in North American and how this phenomenon affects other marine species. On the other hand, the professor provides possible ways in order to control Zebra's population and accounts each author's concerns.

Initially, the reading explains how Zebra were transported by attaching to ships which were traveling from Eastern Europe to the North America and this is the main reason of existence of Zebra in America right now. The author says that Zebra survived in ballast water which were required for balancing ships. On the contrary, the professor says even though people in the past did not have enough knowledge to avoid spreading Zebra population in America, sailors now could release the ballad water in salt water in order to kill shellfishes.

In addition, the reading mentions that Zebras would survive in a variety of condition and also have a high rate of reproduction. More importantly, no predators inhabit in their new habitats. In contrast, the professor states that soon or late birds would be aware of new existence of food sources and eat tremendous Zebras.

Last but not the least, the reading states that since Zebras feed on plankton same as many freshwater fish species, fish population has been reduced. Nevertheless, the professor explains that even though Zebras would decline some fish species' population, they would increase bottom fish population since there are less freshwater fishes to utilize nutrient food supplies.
