TPO-26 - Integrated Writing Task The zebra mussel, a freshwater shellfish native to Eastern Europe, has long been spreading out from its original habitats and has now reached parts of North America. There are reasons to believe that this invasion cannot b

The reading passage states that the zebra mussel spreading in North America is unstoppable as well as dangerous to the environment and provides three reasons for support. Conversely, the professor argues that there are ways to stop the invasion and are not seriously threaten to the habitat.

First, the author posits that the past experience of the zebra mussel's diffusion from human transportation through ships have proven that the invasion cannot be prevented. The professor refutes this reason by stating that people in the past did not have enough awareness to stop them as of people nowadays. Moreover, he says that the way that zebra mussel can be stopped from spreading is that by vacating the water from ships in a salt ocean before arriving in the destination, which helps to kill the zebra mussels in order to decline their population. Therefore, the zebra mussel will stop expanding.

Secondly, the author mentions that there are no natural predators for zebra mussels, which is a reason to let them dominate in their habitats. However, the professor argues that the zebra mussels have no predictors only in the beginning; thereafter, local birds will change their habitat of feeding to eat on zebra mussels; this is because birds will find no food options to them except zebra mussels; thus, they will have difficulty surviving in their habitat.

Finally, although the reading claims that zebra mussels have negative impacts on fish species, the professor points out that also there are positive impacts toward some fish species. He explains that zebra mussels generate food for bottom-feeding fish which helps to increase the population of these fish species. Accordingly, even though the zebra mussels compete with some fish species, they also benefit other species in its survival.

All in all, according to the professor, the argument that zebra mussels are unstoppable and hazardous to the habitat is inaccurate.
