TPO-21 - Integrated Writing Task Genetic modification, a process used to change an organism’s genes and hence its characteristics, is now being used to improve trees through genetic modification. It is possible to create trees that produce more fruit, g

The reading states that genetically modified trees have several benefits. However, the professor raises serious counter-arguments to the reading stated benefits as listed below:

First, the passage states that genetically modified trees are hardier and long-term survival trees, in comparison to natural trees. The professor refutes this point by saying that genetically modified trees cannot withstand the harsh conditions because these trees are not exposed to it before. Indeed, when exposed to some environmental challenges, genetically modified trees may wipe out completely, as the opposite to natural trees.

Secondly, the author mentions that genetically modified trees have an economic benefit to farmers. Conversely, the lecturer contends by saying that there are hidden costs of doing a genetic modification on trees. Farmers are charged more for genetically modified seeds than the seeds of natural trees. Moreover, farmers must pay every time they plant their genetically modified seeds, which is considered as a law. Thus, planting genetically modified trees is expensive for farmers, which opposes the reading point.

Finally, contrary to the belief in the reading passage that genetically modified trees benefit wild trees, the professor argues against this point by stating that it does more damage to than benefit. The lecturer mentions that modified trees grow aggressively rapid and compete with natural trees in their traces and natural resources; thus, modified trees could impact natural trees living.
