In this set of material, the reading passage is about possible reasons which proposed for happening the little ice age. The listening is a lecture by a professor who casts doubts on the factors mentioned in the reading passage.
First, according to the reading warmer weather before the little ice age provided some condition that glaciers melted, As a result, huge amount of water flowed to Gulf Stream which disrupts ocean current; But the professor does not think so. He explains this has little affect because in the southern Africa and New Zealand we can not see this matter.
In addition, the reading passage mentions that volcanic eruption had produced dust and other gases in to atmosphere and prevented sunlight to reach Earth's surface. So, the temperature cooled down. However, the professor believes that if this point was correct, this event could not give enough amount of such materials that cover vast spaces in the world, and due to the little ice age.
Last, the reading asserts that omitting the warming effect of green house effect by decrease of human population, had an important role at causing the little ice age but the professor refutes this phenomena. He claims that absorbing carbon dioxide by trees was not enough amount and critical reason that could cause shortage of this gas for long time. Also, by increasing the human's population, trees were cut and the resulting fields were used for farming again and more that before.
