The lecture forcibly contradicts what is argued in the reading material. According to the passage, the National Geographic Society substantiated the Peary’s account was consistent and persuasive, and it also declared that he had indeed reached the North Pole. Nonetheless, the professor asserts that closer scrutiny of this argument would display how flimsy it is. He, in turn, present several evidences to demonstrate his statement.
To begin with, the professor casts doubt on the theory by contending that some of his friends who contributed much money to him were working at the Nation Geographic Society. Plus, the committee is not only unobjective but also sheerly biased. Therefore, this point undoubtedly forms a contrast with the author’s.
Furthermore, the author affirms that there was a man called Tom Avery who already conquered the difficulty to reach the North Pole in less than 37 days. Thus, Peary’s claims are not impossible. On the contrary, the professor stands in stark opposition and counteracts the viewpoint by expounding that why Tom Avery can vanquish the challenge in less than 37 days is that Tom Avery did not carry the food by himself. Plus, the weather during that time was quite clement; therefore, Tom Avery can attain the goal in less than 37 days. However, Peary carried his food by himself and the weather during that time was quite extremely adverse. This shows that their conditions are entirely different. Thus, the claim of the author is virtually indefensible and does not hold the water.
Last but not least, the passage may be plausible that photograph can prove that Peary has reached the North Pole successfully. Nevertheless, one critical point is left out of consideration. Pointed out by the professor, the reading passage thoroughly neglects the truth that photos may have become blurred and faded. Consequently, we can not measure the accurate position of the sun by calculating the shadows, and we can not even assure the photograph was snapped at the North Pole.
