The assignment states that Robert Peary's claims about reaching the north pole during the the first years of 20th century is true. However the lecturer contradicts this idea, bringing up three reasons vindicating her standpoint.
First, the reading states that the national geographic society set up a group of people specialized in this matter, in order to examine the truth of Peary's claims. And the results illustrate that he had reached the north pole. On the contrary, the lecturer oppses this reason by stating that the set up jury was consisted of some peary's friends who have mutual positive ideas about his claim, so it couldn't be a fair judgement. And also the investigation period takes only 2 days which is a short time for checking all the evidence. This demonstrates that the national geographic investigation is not trustworthy.
Secondly, the assignment accailms that another explorer has recently made it to north pole in the same conditions such as speed and journey duration. And that proves the peary's statement. In contrast the lecturer dismisses this idea buy asserting that not all of the conditions are the same. She says that conditions like weather and cargo weight are not the same in this two journeys which makes this comparison and its' results look nonsense.
The last, but not the least, the article declares that the truth can be inferred from the photographs taken by peary by measuring the shadows and locating sun's position. However the lecturer refutes this idea by claiming that the photos are too old and since finding sun's location from photos need high resolution images with accurate shadow boundaries, the faded and blurred images can't play role as hard evidence.
