Both the author and the lecturer discuss whether Peary reached the North Pole or not. While the author provides evidence to support the Peary's claim, the lecturer disagrees with this claim, casting doubt on every single point the author mentioned.

First of all, the author states that a committee conducted a comprehensive investigation to examine Peary's records and equipment. On the contrary, the lecturer believes that a committee did conduct an investigation but it was not completely objective. Furthermore, Peary’s close friends who funded a large sum of money for Peary’s trip were the members of this committee. In addition, the investigation lasted just two days, meaning that it did not examine Peary’s claim so carefully. Thus, the conclusion of this committee is biased and cannot be trusted.

Second, the author believes that the speed at which Peary reached the North Pole is possible as a British explorer reached within the same days as Peary. However, the lecturer brings up the idea that Avery’s sleds weigh less than Peary’s. Also, the food was given to Avery by airplane. In addition, the condition that Avery traveled was more favorable than that of the Peary's expedition. Therefore, it is highly unlikely that Peary could have reached the North Pole in 37 days.

Finally, the author argues that the photographs that Peary took showed that he reached the North Pole as the Surf S position corresponded exactly to the Surf S position that should have been at the North Pole. In opposition to this, the lecturer possesses the view that they can only understand the position of the sun by measuring the shadows in photographs carefully. However, the pictures of the Peary were unfocused. In addition, the photographs have been faded over time and as a result, the shadows in the Peary’s photographs looked blurred. Therefore, the position of the sun from these shadows cannot be measured by great accuracy.
