The reading passage contends that there are three arguments that support for the truth of Robert E. Peary’s claim. On the other hand, the lecturer brings about several points that contradicts this argument.
First of all, the lecturer questions the validity of the reading passage that a committee that was instructed to conduct a thorough investigation of Peary’s records and equipment put together by the National Geographic Society. This is attributed to the fact that it is true that the committee was instructed to conduct thorough investigation of Peary’s records and equipment. However, the funder is a close friend of Peary and they did not examine his activity carefully. Thus, the reading passage’s first point is invalid.
Moreover, the lecturer cast doubt on the idea in the reading passage that Peary’s claim that he reached the North Pole in only 37 days after setting out from Ellesmere Island off the coast of Greenland is supported by a recent expedition. This is because when Tom Avery who is British explorer fellow the same trek Peary has traveled, the weather condition is quite different. When Peary has traveled, the weather was quite unfavorable to advance. Consequently, the reading passage’s second point is refuted.
Last but not least, the lecturer disagrees with the idea in the reading passage that taken by Peary, photographs support his claim that he has reached the North Pole. It is obvious that it was one hundred years ago when he took pictures during exploration. In addition, at that time, it was difficult to take a picture with clear as if today’s people are used to. The photographs are blurred and faded, not vivid. As a result, the reading passage’s final point is contradicted.
