TPO 29

Both the author and the lecturer discuss whether the Edmontosaurus migrated during the winter to warmer places or not. While the author provides some arguments to support this migration, the lecturer disagrees with this claim, casting doubt on every single point the author mentioned.

First of all, the author states that Edmontosaurus fed on plants. Since there would have been no plants growing during the winter, they should migrate to temperate regions to survive. On the contrary, the lecture brings up the idea that the summer in these regions was much hotter than it is now, providing substantial growing plants. This means that even if the plants die during the winter, the nutrients of them will remain, providing the Edmontosaurus with enough food. Therefore, it is not necessary for them to migrate to find food.

Second, the author believes that many Edmontosaurus' skeletons have been unearthed from the same site, suggesting that they lived in herds. However, the lecturer possesses the view that living in a herd is not the reason for migration. In fact, animals live in herds for other purposes like protecting themselves from predators as well. For example, a type of elc which lives in herds does not migrate. Thus, living in herds cannot be considered as the reason for the migration of Edmontosaurus.

Finally, the author argues that Edmontosaurus were physically capable of migrating long distances, having a speed of 45 kilometers per hour. In opposition to this, the lecturer states that only adult Edmontosaurus can migrate such distances. As a result of this, Edmontosaurus which are not adults will slow down the herd from reaching more hospitable regions because adult Edmontosaurus know that juvenile Edmontosaurus cannot subsist on their own. To sum up, this can be easily inferred that Edmontosaurus could not be capable of migrating long distances.
