TPO 29

The author believes that Edmontosaurs-a kind of big elephant like dinosaur-who lived in the arctic areas of where is now called Alaska, migrated to southern regions with milder climates during cold winters. He postulates several points to support his belief. The lecturer, however, has the opposite point of view. She explains why the author is not right about his idea, and that his points are not convincing.

First, the author states that since Edmontosaurs' diet merely consists of plants, and plants did not grow in winters, they had to migrate to south where plants were plentiful. On the contrary, the lecturer refutes the author's statement by asserting that plants abounded in summer, provided that sun shined 24 hours a day in that regions. Therefore, Edmontosaurs could consume a plethora of dead plants which had grown in summer.

Second, the author contends that the fact that Edmontosaurs, just like today's animals do, lived in herds indicate that they used to migrate. The lecturer, on the other hand, opposes the author's claim by suggesting that there are many reasons for animals living in herds, such as protection from predators. Thus, migration is not the only reason. She provides Rosevelt Elk as an example.

Finally, the author claims that adult Edmontosaurs had physical characteristics which enabled them to migrate a long distance. In contrast, the lecturer counters the author's claim by arguing that young Edmontosaurs lacked necessary physical abilities that enabled them to migrate long distances. For this reason, they could not migrate, nor could they be left alone to die.
