TPO-29 - Integrated Writing Task Large numbers of dinosaur fossils have been discovered in deposits on Alaska's North Slope, a region that today experiences an extremely cold, arctic climate. One hundred million years ago, when those dinosaurs were alive,

The reading and the lecture are both about whether dinosaurs are endotherms, which are species that can regulate their body temperature on a constant temperature. The author of the reading believes that, dinosaurs are endotherms whereas the lecturer casts doubt on the claims made in the article and thus she states that dinosaurs are not endotherms.

First, the author points out that the discovery of dinosaur fossils in polar regions leads to the belief that dinosaurs are endotherm. It is mentioned that only endotherms have the ability to survive in such a cold surrounding environment. This point is challenged by the lecturer, who argues that today’s polar regions were previously warmer. Further, she illustrates that dinosaurs might migrated to warmer regions, rather than stayed in the colder regions.

Secondly, the author contends that the leg positon of dinosaurs is another potential proof that dinosaurs are endotherms, since animals with legs positioned underneath its body are more efficient to achieve sustained physical activity. Further this is characteristic for endotherms. However, the lecturer rebuts this argument. She suggests that the only reason why dinosaurs’ legs are beneath their body is to support the weight.

Finally, the author states that dinosaurs are showing Haversian canals, which allows to grow rapidly. The article establishes that these can also be discovered in modern endotherms. The lecturer, on the other hand, posits that the grow rate of dinosaurs was unsteady. She argues that the thickening of bones slowed the growth of dinosaurs, which is untypically for endotherms since they show a rapid steady growth.
