TPO-29 - Integrated Writing Task Large numbers of dinosaur fossils have been discovered in deposits on Alaska's North Slope, a region that today experiences an extremely cold, arctic climate. One hundred million years ago, when those dinosaurs were alive,

According to the given set of the reading passage, it is the author's conviction that based on the relics on the fossils, the Edmontosaurus, which were living in the North Slope of Alaska, migrated to warmer regions due to several highlighted reasons in the text. On the contrary, the lecturer casts doubt on this justification by providing several counter-arguments that are as follows:

First of all, the reading holds the view that since the Edmontosaurus foraged on plants they should have migrated to other areas because there was not the possibility of plants growing in the cold and dark climate. However, the lecturer finds this hypothesis unconvincing and asserts that the weather, particularly in the summer was warmer than today due to the position of the sun, which was in a peak condition that days. As a result, there has been a suitable condition to vegetation thriving and the nutrients were reachable under the soil till the winter. Therefore, the living condition was so hospitable for the Edmontosaurus and thus the migration was unnecessary.

Secondly, although the author posits that living in the herds is another reason for the traveling of the Edmontosaurus, the lecturer says that there are some important reasons behind the living of animals in the herds. The main reason is that animals which inhabit in the herds can protect themselves very easily against predators. In addition, the lecturer exemplifies the Elk, which lives in the forest of Western United States. They never migrate owing to the existence of large plants. As a result, this hypothesis does not support their migration too.

As the last point to emphasize the reading theory, the author says that the Edmontosaurus had the power of long distances traveling. Yet again, the lecturer states on the opposite side and refutes this theory by explaining that it is true that these animals could have migrated long distances but, the younger age of these species physically did not have the capability of moving for hours and their parents did not leave them behind because they were not able to survive by their own.
