The reading passage and professor both discuss the authenticity of evidences attributed to the migration of Edmontosaurus. The author contends that in order to survive in harsh arctic winter, Edmontosaurus needed to migrate south to more hospitable regions, stating three conspicuous reasons so as to support. However, the lecturer, having a critical point of view, casts a shadow of doubt on what the author proposes. She explains that the mentioned migration hypothesis in the article is unconvincing and refutes each of the author's reasons.
First, the author claims that since Edmontosaurus ate plants, they had to migrate to temprate zones to find food. On the contrary, the professor, not having been convinced, declares that they did not have to migrate for food. She proceeds to state that hundred million years ago, arctic climate was warmer than today. By that time, there was sun there 24 hours of a day during summers. Therefore, there was a good condition for plants to grow during summers. Moreover, in winters, plants would die, and there was plenty of dead plants there that Edmontosaurus could live on.
Second, the author posits that Edmontosaurus lived in herd, and like many moder-day migratory animals, they sould have migrated. The lecturer opposes this point, saying that living in herd does not support the migration hypothesis. To elucidate more on this issue, she explains that there other reasons that animals live in herd. One reason is that they can protect themselves in competitions. According to the professor, one kind of elk, which lives in the Western United States, and plants that also live in that region are good example of this.
Finally, the author highlights the fact that Edmontosaurus were physically able to migrate for long distances. On other hand, the professor states that this is not a good support of the migration hypothesis. She sheds some light on this premise, saying that all animals in herds were not adults. Nonetheless, young animals were not capable of migrating for long distances. We also learn that even though all herd wanted to migrate, young Edmontosaurus would slow down the pace of the movement. In addition, adult ones could not leave young Edmontosaurus behind since they could not survive. This facts are in contradition with the claim that Edmontosaurus could migrate really fast.
