TPO 3 Integrated Essay
The article and the lecture are both about paint of an elderly woman in a white Bonnet. The author of the reading feels that it could not be work by Rembrandt. The lecturer challenges the claims made by the author. The lecturer thinks that it’s done by Rembrandt.
First of all, the author argues that woman wear luxurious full collar and servant could not afford. The article is mentioned that Rembrandt was known attention to the details of his subject while his painting. This point is challenged by the lecturer. He claims the full collar wasn’t part of the original painting. Furthermore, he says that someone painted it hundreds of years after for increase the value of the painting.
Secondly, the author suggests that Rembrandt was master of painting light and shadows. The article notes that in this painting does not element shadow. The lecturer rebuts this argument. He suggests original color of the painting removed by later. He elaborates on this by mentioning that light colored cloth of this collar reflecting that illuminates part of the woman’s face. Therefore, the face is not in partial shadow.
Finally, the author states that painting reveal that it was painted on one panel. Moreover, the article says that it made by several pieces of wood glued together. In contrast, the lecturer’s position is that actual paint done in single piece of wood. He notes that researchers found another painting done by Rembrandt, his self portrait with a hat. This extra wood pieces added to the side for make the painting more grand and more value.
