TPO-30 - Integrated Writing Task A little over 2,200 years ago, the Roman navy attacked the Greek port city of Syracuse. According to some ancient historians, the Greeks defended themselves with an ingenious weapon called a "burning mirror": a polished co

The lecture and passage both discusses about the Greek strategy of burning mirror during the war. According to the author, Greek's did not built the burning mirror during the war and all the tales about that are merely myth. On the other hand, the lecturer consider the tales of burning mirror to be true and provides reasons to believe that burning mirror was used in wars during that time.

First of all, the author argues that Greek technology was not that advance to make a burning mirror from flat sheets of copper. However, the speaker points out that the scientists in the Greek army were very intelligent. They were well versed with geometry and could have known the method of making parabola from flat sheets of copper itself.

Secondly, The article avers that burning mirror method takes lot of time to burn the boats and to the moving boats. So, the method is not efficient and practical. This reason was refuted by the lecturer. He mentions that the boats that were used by Romans were using a sticky substance, which was highly flammable. It can set out fire within seconds and could spread quickly.

Finally, the technology of burning mirror was not at all progressive than that of the burning arrows. Whereas, the orator points out that the Greek strategy of using burning arrows was known to Roman army. They were fully prepared for the attacks by burning arrows and to set off the fire. On the contrary, in case of the burning mirror only rays were seen and were very deceiving. So, when the rays caused fire; they were very surprised. Thus, it was very effective than the burning arrows.
