The lecture and the reading passage are both about the origin of fine lines surrounding the skeletal bones of Sinosauropteryx fossil. While there are three reasons state in the reading passage oppose the idea that the fossil’s lines represent dinosaur feathers, the lecturer casts some doubts on these reasons and believes that these reasons are unconvincing.
First, the lecturer claims that the lines are possible to represent a functional structure. Although it is stated in the reading passage that the skin fiber maintain as lines in the fossil after the dinosaur died, the lecturer mentions that these pattern of lines do not observed in the other animals fossil at the same site. So, the lines cannot be the evidence of skin fibers.
Second, the lecturer asserts that there are chemical differences between feather and frill. While the reading passage states that the lines are much more likely refer to frills, the lecturer says that feathers contain a kind of protein called beta-keratin and frills conversely do not. Chemical researches on the Sinosauropteryx fossil show existence of beta-keratin in there, as a result the lines cannot be the evidence of frills.
Third, the lecturer states that feathers have other function rather than flight or thermoregulation. Although the reading passage mentions that feathers made the structures useless for flight or temperature regulation, the lecturer argues that feathers may use to attract to mate. For example, the Peacock display long, colorful feathers in its tail for attraction. According to recent studies, the lines are colorful almost orange and white and it points that line represent colorful attractive feathers.
