The reading and lecture both discuss the theory that sinosauropteryx was a feathered dinosaur or not. While the reading states three points to support that Sinosauropteryx was not a feathered dinosaur, the professor refutes, saying none of these claims are convincing.
Firstly, the reading shows that the fine lines that found on the fossil skeleton did not show any functional structures. In addition, these lines because of decomposition of skin fibers then these fibers preserved as lines. On the other hand, the speaker argues this notion saying that these lines were strongly functional structures and they were not due to the skin decomposition. This is because we did not find any other animal decomposition. Moreover, the fine lines were a big evidence of skin structure because they preserved at this volcanic area. So, these lines related to functional structure feathered not fibers.
In addition, the article avers that these lines were related to frills not to feathered. However, the professor questions this idea by pointing out that frills are chemically different from feathered. He states that feathered contains keratin and proteins but frills do not contain any keratin in their bodies. Besides, feathered contains keratin. As a result, these fine lines were related to feathered skeleton not related to frills.
Lastly, the reading states that the main objective feathered function is to help animals to fly but these lines of sinosauropteryx were at tails and backbone. So, these lines could not show any help for this dinosaur to fly. Nevertheless, the professor contradicts this point by saying that animal used these tails to attract males. Moreover, there were many studies showed that these tails were colored orange and white to support the idea of these feathered used these tails for display.
