The reading specifies that submarines who patrolling in the North Atlantic and Arctic Ocean hear strange sounds and provide three theories about what might have caused the odd sounds. However, the professor say that author's theories have certain problems and introduce three reasons and refute them all.
First of all, the reading assert that the strange sounds is produce by male and female orca during courtship ritual. In fact, the orca live in that area and use this sound to attract male. Nevertheless, the speaker opposes this idea reasoning that orca population do not live in a deep water and its habitats are near surface. Therefore, the sumarines who are in a deep water cannot hear their sounds and also if the orca spread this voice, sonar can detect it.
Second, based on the reading, giand squids are responsible for quack noises and the reason the sonar cannot detect them is because they have soft bodies with no skeleton. Moreover, giant squids are intelligent animal and it is plausible they have the ability to emit wierd sound. In contrast, the professor states that the strange noises disappear after a time and giant squids still living in that area and it is not rational for submarine to think this sounds suddenly stops. Therefore, if the source of quckers was the squid, it would have been continued thereafter.
Third, according to the reading, foreign submarine from other countries patrolling the area and unintentionally they emit sounds. Conversely, the lecturer contradicts this point by saying that the strange sounds move around and change direction rapidly. Others submarines do not have the technology to alter their direction quickly. Also, their engine make many noise and can be recognize by sonar.
