TPO 32 - Integrated Writing

The text and lecture offer two opposing views on three possible theories about what might have caused the strange sounds that sailors in Russian submarines would sporadically hear starting in the 1960s and continuing the 1980s while patrolling the North Atlantic and the Arctic Ocean. Whereas the reading lists reasons to be supportive of those theories, the professor in the lecture counters those reasons explaining that these sounds definitely seem to be strange phenomena and no one is quite sure what source or sources of the odd sounds could be. But, there are certain problems with all the theories noted in the text and she refutes each of the author's reasons.

First, the passage claims that the strange noises might be the calls of male or female Ocra whales. On the contrary, the professor rejects this point by saying that this cause seems plausible at first but, it is highly unlikely. Considering that the whales live near the surface of the oceans and submarines go deeply, these machines could not have heard the sounds.

Second, the reading posits that the sounds were caused by giant squid which are giant marine invertebrates that live deep in the ocean. With soft bodies and no skeleton, they are difficult to detect by sonar. However, the professor in the lecture opposing this point by explaining that these sounds started to be heard in the 1960s and reported for decades until they disappeared in the 1980s. If it was the giant squid that caused them, it seems unreasonable that they suddenly started to be heard one decade and all of a sudden stopped.

Third, the text states that Russian submarines might have heard the stray sounds from some military technology, like another country's submarines that were secretly patrolling the area. As they were secretly moving in the oceans, it means that they did not register on sonar. That is why Russian submarines' sonar could not hear them. In contrast, the professor says that this theory does not hold up. It is because it looked like the source of the strange sounds moved very swiftly and changed its direction very fast whereas no submarines could change their directions very quickly. Moreover, even today, we do not have the technology to build engines of the submarines to function silently let alone in the 1960s.
