TPO 32 - Integrated Writing Task
The reading states that sailors in Russian submarines patrolling the north Atlantic and Arctic Ocean would sporadically hear odd sounds starting in the 1960s until the 1980s. These strange sounds reminded them of frog croaks. That is why they called them "quackers". The sources of these sounds seemed to be moving very quickly. However, the submarines' sonar could not be able to detect any moving object in that area. There are a number of theories about what might have caused these odd sounds. So, the reading provides three reasons of support with regard to these theories. However, the professor in the lecture explains that these sounds are like strange phenomena and refutes each of the author's reasons as follows.
First, the reading claims that the sources might be the calls of male and female Ocra whales during courtship rituals. The professor, however, rejects this point by saying that this claim seems plausible at first but, it turns out to be highly unlikely. She affirms that these kinds of whales actually live near surface whereas submarines float deeply in oceans. So, it is unlikely that these machines could have heard their sounds.
Second, the article posits that giant squids seem to be the causes of the sounds. The professor, however, refutes this point explaining that these animals seem to be better candidates in comparison to others. But, considering the fact that giant squids always live there in Oceans, as these sounds first were heard in the 1960s and reported for decades till the 1980s when suddenly they became disappeared, we cannot conclude that these sounds are because of those animals.
Finally, the reading states that maybe military technologies are the sources of these sounds. To put it another way, it is likely that other countries' submarines might have been floating in the Oceans secretly and that is why Russians have been hearing them for decades. The professor refutes this point by saying that given that the sources of these sounds change their directions very quickly, due to the fact that submarines cannot change their directions very fast, this claim does not lead us to the conclusion that military technologies are the possible causes of them.
