The passage talks about the possible theories about concepts and intention of discovered carved stone balls in Scotland. The author of the reading claims three different theories; however, the professor holds a various idea and refuting reasons provided in the passage.
First, the reading mentions that stone balls have used as a weapons in hunting or fighting. It indicates that cord connected with stones and grooves on the surface of stones validate this theory. While, the professor casts doubt on the reality of the using stone balls in purpose of prey or battle. He points that if stone ball have applied for this aim we should see trace of damaging on their surface; whereas, not only there is not any crushed stone but also no stone with crack on its surface has observed.
In addition, the passage says that people for weighting food or other crops were utilized stone ball. According to the reading because all of the stone balls have same shape and were same. In contrast, the professor argues that the alike shape cannot demonstrate that stones were for weighting purpose. He points that stones are made by different stone types, therefore, as a result they will have various weight due to their density difference.
As a final point, with attention to the reading, another possible theory about stone balls could be social purpose usage. The detailed design of stones justifies this statement. On the contrary, the listening rebuts that theory by pointing out that there is no evidence which illustrate the stones were applied in communities object. The professor notes that if the stones were used for this target, we were expected to find any proof in the temples or people's graves of that era.
