TPO 33: CARVED STONE BALLSReading:Carved stone balls are a curious type of artifact found at a number of locations in Scotland. They date from the late Neolithic period, around 4,000 years ago. They are round in shape; they were carved from several types

The lecturer disputes the author's claims that the carved stone balls had a purpose in the Neolithic ages. He casts doubt about the author's claims and suggests that non of the mentioned uses are of relevance.

First, the lecturer does not agree with the first point made in the reading that carved stone balls were used as weapons to hunt animals. He contends the the absence of tears or wears makes the use of these balls as a weapon invalid. Besides, the preserved appearance of the stone balls makes us believe that they might have other usage than being a weapon.

Second, the author suggests that the carved stone balls may have been used as a scale to measure different weight because of their identical sizes. However, the lecturer finds this idea debatable. He states that researchers found pieces of different weights and different densities. For stone balls to be used as a scales they should have standardized weights which is not true for the discovered stones.

Finally, according to the author the carved balls may have been used as a marker to show the social status of their owners. However, the lecturer contends that not all stone ball discovered by archaeologists have the same pattern which makes it not suitable to serve this purpose. Moreover, these stone ball were not found buried in the caves of their owner, a tradition that Neolithic have practiced upon their death.
