The speaker argues that all the theories behind the use of the stones found in Scotland from Neolithic age are false. This calls into question the reading that gives three speculations of the the use of these stones.
According to the speaker, the stones could not have been used as weapons as there are no signs of wear and tear on these stones, unlike on arrows and axes that were the weapons used in this age. The stones found are well preserved. This goes against the reading which states that the holes and the grooves on the surface indicate that the stone could have been tied to a string and whirled around to be used as a weapon.
Also, the from the lecture we know that these stones are made up different materials that have different densities. As the sizes of these artifacts are almost the same, their weights vary according to their densities. Thus they are unfit to be used as a weighing balance for trade. Whereas, the reading implies that as were of the same size it can be inferred that they were used as a weight measure. It does not discuss the different type of material used in making these balls.
Finally the speaker contends that the exclavated carved balls were possibly not priced pocessions of the owners. This is because of two reasons. First is that some of the markings are severly simple to be of any importance. The second is that during those times the pocessions of the person were burried with him. However these stones are not found in graves or tombs, and so the this theory is ousted. This contradicts the reading which claims,on the basis of few stones that have ornate designs on them, that they represented the higher social standing of their owers.
Thus the speaker debunks each theory by giving a credible argument agains it.
