The main topic of both the reading and the lecture is about the reasons of the extinction of enormous sea cows so-called Steller's sea cow around the coast of Siberia in 1768. The reading states three major reasons for their extinction, while the lecturer categorically refutes them all, saying that there should be other stimulus to reach them to the point of extinction.
Firstly, the reading claims that sea cows were assumed to be a prominent source of food for indigenous Siberian people, so they have been overhunted. However, the lecturer finds this debatable, suggesting that these huge mammals are so hard to achieve and a couple of them were enough to feed the whole population of the native Siberian people since their folks were too small. Thus, it was not crucial to hunt them all and extinct them.
Secondly, the reading argues that the ecological disturbances had affected their source of food, known as kelp. In contrast, the lecturer denies this fact, citing that if there were any ecological disturbances in 1768, it should have been happened for other marine creatures such as Whales. Moreover, the fishing ships should have reported some unusual changes in the population of kelps, which they did not.
Finally, the reading discusses that the European fur trader by utilizing some special weapons hunted them and made them extinct. Conversely, the lecturer contradicts this idea and states that when European traders reached this place, sea cows had small population. He mentions that their population was larger a hundred years ago and the reduction of their population was not the trader's fault. Thus, there must have been other reasons for their extinction.
