The reading passage discusses an interesting topic about the extinction of the Steller's sea cow, a huge marine mammal who lived around Bering Island, and provides three reason with extensive information of support for why this extinction happened. However, the lecturer casts doubts to all of the reasons giving by the reading passage. He believes nobody knows for sure why this huge mammal disappeared.
First of all, the reading passage argues that one motive for the extinction of the sea cow could be its overhunting by Siberian natives. On the contrary, the lecturer states that the size of the mammal was bigger enough to feed a couple of small villages. In consequence, no need of big hunting would be necessary to feed the small native population and thus, this claim can not explain the disappearing of the sea cow.
Secondly, the reading passage explains how the kelp population decline due to ecosystems changes. Therefore, the population of the sea cow declined too because the kelps were its main source of food, according to the reading passage. The lecture opposes to this claim by sustain that a ecosystem disturbance would affected other species like whales, that have same sources of food, and not only the sea cows.
Finally, the reading passage claims that other main cause of the extinction of the sea cow could have been the action of European fur traders, who arrived to the island by 1741. Challenging this idea, the lecturer refutes the reading passage explaining that by the time European fur traders arrived, the population of the sea cow was already very low. Thus, something else was the real cause of its extinction and should have started many years before any European steps on the Being Island to hunt them.
