In the reading passage, the author provides three theories regarding the extinction of sea cows. The lecturer, however, points out the problems of each assertion.
First, the author mentions that sea cows may have been overhunted by native Siberian which caused the extinction eventually. The lecturer rebuts this point, contending that sea cows were massive mammals; on the other hand, in contrast to the population of native Siberian, it was not quite large. In conclusion, a couple of sea cows could be enough to support native Siberian; thus, there was no need to overhunt sea cows.
Second, it is believed that ecosystems disturbances may have resulted in a decrease of sea cow's main food source, kelps, which may have contributed to their extinction. This is countered by the lecturer again. The lecturer points out that if the ecosystem disturbances did occur around the island, other mammals would have been affected too. Nevertheless, there is no evidence indicates that other mammals such as whales had declined. Hence, sea cows never had encountered the shortage of food.
Third, the extinction is also attributed to the European fur traders by the author. The lecturer refutes this view, suggesting that by the time the European fur traders came to the island, the population of sea cows was already small. Furthermore, he asserts that sea cow population has begun to decline hundreds of years ago. Therefore, it is something else responsible for the extinction of sea cows.
