The main topic of both the reading and the lecture is about the origin of the Voynich book. The reading passage claims that there are several theories for this phenomenon that who is the main author of that book. On the other hand, the lecturer not only casts doubt on every single point raised by the author through citing three different counter-arguments but also believes that none of the names mentioned in the passage is the real author of that manuscript.
To begin with, the reading passage establishes that the book is a genuine work several scientific and magical topic written in an intricate secret code. In contrast, the lecturer rebuts this idea, stating that the mentioned subjects with secret codes do not fit with Anthony Ascham's field of study because he was an ordinary physician and could not understand those concepts and figures in the manuscript. Therefore, it is unlikely he was the author of the Voynich manuscript.
Furthermore, the author brings up this notion that the due to the fact the manuscript's text does not have real meaning, therefore, another theory is that this book was written as a fake manuscript in order to sell to prosperous and rich individuals. Conversely, the lecturer supports a mutually exclusive view compared to that of the passage and specifies that it is not likely that Kelly is the author of the manuscript because if he wanted to write a fake book and sold to rich people in order to make money, it would not be necessary for him to write in a complex format as well as do many works. The people of that time was really quite simple and did not need to write a book with complicated text.
Eventually, the reading passage goes on to mention that due to the fact that Voynich had the information about the appearance of ancient manuscripts, consequently, he created a contemporary fake book to sell it as a strange ancient book. Notwithstanding, the lecturer points out that it is now very easy to date the modern manuscripts by checking the materials of pages and ink. The pages and ink of that book should be for 400 years ago. It is true that he was able to buy well pages for 400 years ago by paying more money but he could not buy the ink.
